What a good SEO audit includes.

A good SEO audit tells you what is holding your site back and what to fix first. It covers technical health, content, local presence and AI search visibility, and it ends in a ranked list of actions. If it is a pile of tool output with no priorities, it is a report, not an audit.

How we write and check articles is set out in our editorial policy.

What an audit is for

An audit answers three questions: can search engines reach and understand your site, does your content match what customers search for, and what should you do first? Google's Search Essentials set out the baseline: technical requirements, spam policies and key best practices. A sound audit checks your site against all three.

1. Technical health

  • Pages return the right status codes; important pages are not blocked or marked noindex by accident.
  • A valid XML sitemap and a correct robots.txt.
  • Canonical tags point to the right versions, with no duplicate URLs competing.
  • Redirects are direct, with no chains or loops.
  • Mobile layout works and pages meet Core Web Vitals thresholds. See our technical SEO checklist.

2. Content and on-page

  • Each page targets one clear topic, with no pages competing for the same search.
  • Titles and descriptions are unique and accurate.
  • There is one H1 per page, with headings in a logical order.
  • Answers appear early, in plain language, and pages are genuinely useful.
  • Thin, duplicated or outdated pages are identified.

3. Local presence and AI visibility

  • Google Business Profile is complete, compliant and consistent with the website. See the local SEO checklist.
  • The questions customers ask are tested in Google and AI assistants, and the results recorded.
  • Crawlers that power AI search features are not blocked unintentionally.

4. Authority and trust

  • Who links to you, and whether those links come from relevant, credible sources.
  • Evidence of real expertise: named authors, genuine reviews, accurate business information.
  • No spammy tactics that put the site at risk.
